Living out the Lyrics: “My Texas” by Josh Abbot Band, feat Pat Green
Josh Abbott Band, featuring Pat Green, released the song “My Texas” back in 2012. When I heard it, I loved it, and I said out loud to my husband and my daughters, “We have to do all of these things within one year! Wouldn’t that be fun?” They agreed, and we decided on “someday”—that unspecified time on the calendar where dreams go to die. Every year, every time I’d hear that song, I’d think, When will we live out “My Texas”?
My daughters graduated high school, then college, then they moved to different cities. Life kept on life-ing. I started a business, my husband changed jobs, and that darned ol’ clock kept ticking away, taking missed memories with it.
Here we are, thirteen years later, and I finally decided, why not now? What the heck am I waiting for? I’m getting busy making memories in the land of Someday. Someday is today! I absolutely love the great state I come from and the Texas landscape offers hills and plains, ocean and lakes, urban cities and country living. My desire is explore the Lone Star state and to show my girls that Someday is not a place to stow away dreams forever.
We’ve experienced some of the lyrics’ events before, like going to the Houston Rodeo, visiting the Riverwalk in San Antonio, or “having our hair blown back by a Lubbock wind” (many times, as we’re originally from there), yet others will be new to us! Although my girls cannot make all the concerts and trips, they are plugging in as they can. The hubs will be along for most of the adventure.
The events will take place throughout the calendar year. Some events are fixed (like the rodeos), while others will take place as they work into our busy schedules.
LET’S GO! Join our adventure and follow along with the blog! August 2025 - August 2026.
Lyrics to the song:
If you haven't climbed up to Enchanted Rock, Drank a cold Shiner down in Luckenbach,
Taken your baby to the River Walk, Then you ain't met My Texas yet.
If you haven't floated down the Ol’ Frio, Heard Red Dirt music on your radio,
Eaten Cooper's down in Llano, Then you ain't met My Texas yet.
You haven't been to the Houston rodeo, Sang "Carry On" at a Pat Green show,
If you ain't seen an Abilene sunset, Then you ain't met My Texas yet.
If you never caught a trout down in Port A, Heard the words to Corpus Christi Bay,
Never seen fireworks on PK, Then you ain't met My Texas yet.
Haven’t had a kolache when you go through West, Never heard of the Larry Jo Taylor fest,
Think polished pop country crap sounds the best, Then you ain't met My Texas yet.
You haven't been to the Ft. Worth stock show, Sang along with Cory Morrow, You ain't seen a hill country sunset, Then you ain't met My Texas yet.
You say you haven't hiked through Big Bend, Had your hair blown back by a Lubbock wind,
Been somewhere where they call you "friend", then you ain't met My Texas yet.
You haven't been to the San Antone rodeo, Sang "Everclear" at a Creager show, If you ain't seen an El Paso sunset, Then you ain't met My Texas yet. No, you ain't met My Texas yet
