Cory Morrow at Gruene Hall

Our third adventure on our tour of Texas, Josh Abbott style, takes place in Gruene (pronounced Green) in New Braunfels at Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas built in 1878 and they host live music nightly.

“Sang along with Cory Morrow”

Cory Morrow put on a fun show! He sings Texas Country music of course! Well, “Cory Morrow didn’t become a Texas legend by being quiet. He sings about strippers and Jesus with equal fervor.” Sounds like Texas to me!

If you’re headed to New Braunfels and Gruene, here’s some info that you might find useful.

We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard New Braunfels River Village and let me tell you something, this is more than just a Courtyard Hotel! They have a gorgeous outdoor space that backs up the Guadalupe River, with benches right on the riverbank. There’s a fire pit, stringed lighted from the large hotel patio to the trees in the yard. There are lawn games like cornhole, and a gated pool. Inside is a full bar and restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is ample seating in the lobby area and a small fitness center. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and spacious as well. This hotel is perfect for a family, and Matt and I enjoyed it too! It’s just a short drive to Gruene from there.

You got to go have supper at The Grismill, next door to Gruene. The restaurant is located beneath Gruene’s landmark water tower, in the ruins of an 1878 cotton gin, overlooking the Guadalupe River. They serve what I term “Texan cuisine”, which is a combination of Southern American, and Mexican dishes. They have many cocktails to choose from, including one of the best Margarita’s I’ve had, the Perfect Patron Margarita.

We also visited the Cantina del Rio, offering delicious Mexican food. Yummy fajitas, and fantastic margs! It’s only two doors down from Gruene Hall.

The area is walkable so you can shop, eat, and play at the many shops and restaurants.

Gruene Hall - Know before you go:

  • Free parking across the street.

  • No AC. Dress cool, cute, and comfy.

  • No food

  • No hard liquor: they serve beer and seltzers.

  • When it’s packed, it’s hard to find a place to dance so just create a space wherever there is room. They don’t section off a dance area.

  • Large outdoor space with picnic tables and misting fans to keep you cool. The bathrooms are located outside of the main dance hall and in another building adjacent.

Listen, every time I visit, it feels like going home, seriously. I love, love Gruene - it feels like stepping back to a simpler time. Visit and check out Cory Morrow when he plays again. You won’t be disappointed!
